Since the publication of the first edition of this work considerable advances have been made in the various departments of Steel Manufacture, necessitating the addition of new matter to each edition, while the amount of letterpress which it has been found possible to delete has been comparatively small; the volume has thus been gradually increased in size, until it has become too cumbersome for convenient handling. It has therefore been decided to divide the present edition into two volumes, the first dealing with the Manufacture and Metallurgy of Steel and the Physical Properties of Finished Steel, and the second volume covering the liiatter dealt with in former editions by Mr. J. W. Hall in the section on "The Mechanical Treatment of Steel."
The scheme of the work has not been altered, but only such additions and modifications have been made as have been rendered necessary by the advancement in the theory and the practice of the art.
In the first volume drawings showing the latest modifications in open hearth furnaces and the latest types of charging machines and gas producers have been introduced, and in the chapter on the Basic Open Hearth recent developments and modifications are described and discussed; the chapter on Electric Smelting has also been brought, as far as possible, up to date. Various additions have been made to what may be called the more theoretical chapters, embodying the results of the latest research in the different branches, and a complete set of new photo-micrographs has been prepared to replace those in the last edition. Several Plans of various new installations, illustrating the general designs of the most modern works erected in Europe and America, have also been added.
