The Mexican Dream [antikvár]

Translator's Note Translating Le reve mexicain (The Mexican Dream) has been a moving and enlightening task. For this is a special book, one which forces the reader to rethink—and to re-feel—the history of the Conquest of Mexico and the fate of the Amerindian peoples. Beyond describing the extraordinarily rich and complex cultures of those peoples, M. Le Clézio makes the American adventure and the effect it had on the lives and civilizations of Indian populations—and consequently on our own—an immediate, disturbing issue. One of the ways in which the author achieves this is through his use of many original texts, written in Spanish or in Nahuad by those who experienced first-hand the events he describes. Wherever possible I have used the standard English-language translations of those texts, and have cited the appropriate references. When published translations could not be obtained, I translated directly from Le Clézio's French versions.
