Foreword
As Professor W. B. Fisher has pointed out in his survey of the past year in the Middle East, two items have dominated the area since the appearance of the last edition of The Middle East and NoKth Africa. The first was the revolution in Iran, which reached its climax in early 1979, and the second was the signing of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel in March 1979. Both these events have had their repercussions on political alignments in other parts of the Middle East and upon the world energy situation. The relationship between Middle Eastern oil and the current world energy crisis is fully dealt with by Michael Field in his article on 'Oil in the Middle East and North Africa', which describes the position up to and including the OPEC meeting in Geneva and the Tokyo energy summit held by the seven major industrial democracies in late June 1979.
Once again we would like to thank the numerous individuals and organizations who have sent us both revised and new information for inclusion in this edition of The Middle East and North Africa. Without their assistance the book could not have become a recognized authority on the region.
