One NO ONE CANENTER MIDWICH a. i was born on the 26th September. Because it was my birthday, my wife and I went up to London on the 26th, to see a play and return the next morning to Midwich. Therefore my wife was not in Midwich that night. We shall always be very glad indeed about that. We had a good easy run on the way home. We stopped in Trayne to do a little shopping, then drove along through the village of Stouch, then took a right-hand turn for Midwich-but no! Across the road was a large notice: road closed. A policeman standing there held up his hand. "Sorry, sir, but the road is closed." "You mean I'll have to go round by the Oppley road?" "I'm sorry-that's closed too, sir." "But-" While we were speaking an army lorry full of young soldiers drove past us towards Midwich. There were about thirty men in it. "We live in Midwich, Constable." "I know, sir, but there's no way there just now. If I were you, sir, I'd go back to Trayne until we get it clear." Janet opened the door on her side and took out her shopping bag. "FII walk on and you come along when the road's clear," she said. The constable spoke very quietly. "As you live there madam, I must teli you something. It's no use trying. Nobody can get into Midwich and that's a fact." 1
