Introduction In this book are collected thirteen passages from modern novelists writing in the English language; my hope is that they will serve as an introduction for anyone who has hitherto neglected the modern növel, or is hazy about the developments it has made. Two writers, James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence, more or less picked themselves; for the rest, selection has been difficult. There is little to choose between a number of novelists left out and a number of those included. I have tried to select those who need, in my view, to be better known, or who, though well known, are still challenging enough to make it useful to introduce them in a book for study. Alsó, other things being equal, I have preferred novels published within the last thirty years. The extracts are arranged in chronological order of the date of first publication; each is preceded by a summary of the writer's main work and of somé distinctive characteristics, and followed by a few notes, including recommendations for further reading. I have had in mind the older pupils of secondary schools, as well as the generál reader, and hope the extracts chosen will oífer reasonably easy introductions to what are in somé cases difficult and fully aduit books. I have alsó tried to choose passages where the story itself forms an interesting episode;
