INTRODUCTION
Wilkie Collins was born in 1824 and died in 1889. He was a friend of Charles Dickens, and worked with him on the writing of a number of stories. Collins alsó produced numer-ous popular novels of his own, of which the two best known are The Woman in White and The Moonstone. He was particularly skilful in the construction of a good story. Of The Moonstone, he said that it was " an attempt to trace the influence of character upon circumstances."
