Bővebb ismertető
The very distinguished collection which makes up this exhibition was formed by the late Captain Vivian Bulkeley-Johnson, who died in 1968. It reveals a taste in Chinese art as sure and individual in its choice as it was catholic in its aim. To his widow, Mrs. Bulkeley-Johnson, who shared her husband's interest in Chinese art, the Museum owes its profound thanks for the generous loan which makes the exhibition possible.
In his life Captain Bulkeley-Johnson was much involved with social and philanthropie work, and the exhibition springs from Mrs. Bulkeley-Johnson's belief that he would have wished the collection to be widely seen and enjoyed. Under the auspices of the Museum's Department of Circulation, it can be made available to any suitable institution in the British Isles, the intention being that it should be kept on display for periods of six months or longer at a time. This will enable visitors to acquire a familiarity with the collection impossible in a shorter term. The launching of a fully-equipped exhibition on this scale represents a significant extension of the Museum's loan services, lts ample size and notably high standard of quality will undoubtedly enlarge the appréciation of Chinese art outside those areas in which substantial permanent collections are already available. The catalogue has been compiled by Mr. John Ayers, Keeper, Far Eastern Section.
