1 Evidence from the stories : The Trojan War
AN APPLE STARTS A WAR
Once in Greece there was a wedding going on. All the gods and goddesses had been invited except one. She was called 'Eris', which means 'trouble'. Eris waited until the guests were enjoying themselves. Then she threw down her present onto the floor. It was an apple made of gold. On the apple was written, 'Give this to the most beautiful lady here.' The apple rolled at the feet of three goddesses, Hera, Athene and Aphrodite. Hera was the wife of the king of the gods. Athene was the Goddess of Wisdom. Aphrodite was the Goddess of Love. All three wanted the apple. Luckily the king of the gods was at the wedding and he gave the apple to one of his page-boys. He told him to take it, along with the three goddesses, to a shepherd called Paris, who lived far away near the city of Troy.
Paris had to decide which goddess should get the apple. One by one they came up to him. 'Give me that apple and I will give you the lands of Asia,' Hera commanded. 'You are trying to bribe me, my lady,' said Paris. Then Athene marched up to him and said, 'Hand over the apple, my lad, and I will teach you how to win every fight.' 'You are trying to bribe me, my lady,' said Paris. Finally Aphrodite snuggled up to Paris and whispered in his ear, 'Let me have the apple and the most beautiful girl in the world will be yours.' Paris never said a word. He just gave her the apple.
