To the StudentThe Nelson Proficiency Course is a complete preparation for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. It is designed for students who have reached at least the level of Cambridge First Certificate. The course places particular emphasis on developing your vocabulary and improving your ability to understand authentic English, through the use of substantial reading passages and listening material. The course consists of a Students' Book, two cassettes, and a Teacher's Book (containing notes for teachers, answers and tapescripts). There is also an optional Workbook of additional grammar and vocabulary exercises. The Students' Book has twelve units, each based on a particular theme. The themes of Units 7-12 are related to the themes of Units 1-6. For example, Unit 8: Survival and Endurance is thematically related to Unit 2: Danger and Risk. In this way, you have the opportunity to consolidate what you have learned in the earlier units. The units are similar but not identical in pattern, but each unit contains the following sections;Lead-in This introduces the unit topic and stimulates thought and discussion. Vocabulary building exercises prepare you for the vocabulary that you will encounter in the rest of the unit, and that you will need in order to talk and write about the theme.Theme one This is the first of three 'theme sections' which explore different aspects ofthe unit topic. Typically, it is based on a substantial reading text, with varied types of comprehension questions, and authentic listening material. Practice in writing summaries based on a text is provided in one of the theme sections in each unit.Language awareness This section focuses on particular aspects of the English Language, such as puns and clichés.Theme two A second theme section, again using authentic reading texts and listening material, but providing a different perspective on the unit topic.Grammar This section deepens and extends your knowledge of English grammar, using a deductive approach which encourages you to think about and discuss the language in focus.
