HOW TO USE THIS DICTIONARY
This dictionary supplies the spelling, syllabication, pronunciation, and meaning of the most useful words of the English language as it is spoken in the United States. Abbreviations, foreign words and phrases, and the names and descriptions of places may be found in the pages following the main vocabulary.
Words are not listed separately when they are identical in spelling and pronunciation and differ only in etymology.
SPELLING
Where a word may correctly be spelled in more than one way, we have generally preferred the simplest way. Space does not permit us to include every spelling for which there is authority. The user of this dictionary may rely upon finding a correct way to spell his word, but it will not necessarily be the only correct way.
SYLLABICATION
Each word in its first spelling is divided into syllables, either by stress marks or by dots. The syllable preceding the mark (') is primarily stressed; a syllable preceding the mark (") receives secondary stress. The dots should not be confused with hyphens. When a word is to be hyphenated in spelling, it is marked with a bold, long hyphen (-).
It is not conventionally proper to divide a word, at the end of a line, at any place except where a stress mark, dot or hyphen appears. Even where the dictionary shows a division into syllables, it is not good style to leave a single letter of a word on one line; for example, words like abound, alike, glossy, should not be divided between lines.
