Brockenhurst and the Southern Woodlandsfor the purposes of this book, the New Forest is jjplivided into five districts - ss shown on the map on pp. 6-7. Each districi is bounded by easily identifiable koads and by the New Forest boundary. This means that the boundaries are mostly clearly defined on the ground in the form of a tarmac road, a fence, or cattle grid.F Each districi, while maintaining the unmistakable atmosphere of the New Forest, has something of its own to contribute. The area around Brockenhurt is perhaps the best known of all. The massive Douglas Ars, Sequoias, and other exotic conifers of the Rhinefield Tali Trees walk are among the chief Jpttractions of the Forest. Around Brockenhurst, pnormous numbers of ponies roam at will over the !Sidespread grasslands, and Balmer Lawn Hotel is a fine landmark, especially when cricket is in progress. Nearby Brockenhurst and Putties Bridges draw the .crowds for swimming and splashing on warm summer days, while between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst lieOur first impression of the New Forest as somewhere special, a place apart, almost always includes the ponies -especially in spring, when most of them are born. Wandering at will across the spreading heathland and through the 'Ancient and Ornamental Woodlands', they saunter onto the roads and stop the traffic - to the delight of children in cars!
