NOTEThe New Method Readers are very widely used for teaching English as a second language. It has been felt that it would be an advantage to have an alternative series based on the same principles, and making use of the same words as the original series. This book, Alternative Reader One, is the first of such a series. It is intended for use in cases where a change is required from the present Reader One, or for classes where several children have not been promoted at the end of the year, and have therefore to repeat the same course, but do not wish to read again the identical book which they studied in the previous year.It will be noted that the stories and articles in this alternative series are written in a better style and seem to read better than those in the original series. This does not mean that they are more difficult. It means that, after ten years' experience with the vocabulary, the author is able to make better use of his resources. The style of these readers is actually easier than that of the originals. Certain recent studies have revealed what are the main factors in reading difficulty apart from vocabulary (e.g. shortness of sentences, avoidance of compound sentences, elliptical expressions, etc. etc.). Observance of these factors has enabled the writer to produce a style which reads smoothly and fairly elegantly and yet is actually easier than that formerly used. Moreover, greater care has been taken in pointing out slight shifts of meaning of a word, thus preventing stoppages due to unexplained difficulties.; You know 222 wordsfrom the Primer
