Preface to the series
This book is a volume in The Making of the Past, a series describing in comprehensive detail the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciplines. Written by experts under the guidance of a distinguished panel of advisers, it is designed for the layman, young people, the student, the armchair traveler and the tourist. Its subject is a new history -the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstructed by skilled specialists like the authors of these volumes. Since these writers are themselves leaders in a rapidly changing field, the series is completely authoritative and up-to-date; but it loses nothing of the excitement of earlier discoveries. Each volume covers a specific period and region of the world and combines a detailed survey of the modern archaeology and sites of the area with dramatic stories of the pioneer explorers, travelers and archaeologists who first penetrated it. Part of each book is devoted to a reconstruction in pictures of the newly revealed cultures and civiHzations that make up the history of the area. As a whole, the series not only presents a fresh look at the most famihar of archaeological regions such as Egypt and Classical Greece, but also provides up-to-date information and photographs of such archaeologically Httle-known areas as the Islamic world, the Far East and Africa.
