PREFACEWhen in the fall of 1969 my interest in Anthony Trollope led me to make inquiries about the unpublished New Zealander, Robert H. Taylor, owner of the manuscript, graciously allowed me to examine it. The work proved to be of far more importance than perhaps anyone had expected, and he generously gave me permission to edit the manuscript. In addition to making this book possible, he has assisted with difficult readings and made invaluable suggestions. To Gordon N. Ray, Professor of English at New York University, I am especially indebted. He has examined the text in detail, and he has patiently guided, encouraged, and assisted the project from its inception as a doctoral dissertation to the publication of this final version.I have also had important assistance from the following: Professors Gerald B.
