CHAPTER ONEGood m-o-o-o-orning, La-a-ambie!"Lambert nearly fell down the last two steps. Then he realized it couldn't be Biff Finnegan and his gang. Even when Biff used a sissy voice to sneer at Lambert, he didn't sound anj^hing like a girl. Lambert braced himself on the broom and peeked under his bent arm.Frances Ward stood on the sidewalk, grinning up at him. She held a large basket in front of her, both hands on the handle. Lambert straightened and scowled down at her."What are you doing out this early?" he said. The sun hadn't touched even the tallest trees in Washington Square park across the street. The milkman's cart was just two short blocks away and the iceman had already delivered. But nobody else in New York was out this early. Not even the street sweepers with their white barrels on wheels. It was so quiet that Lambert could hear the iron wheels of the market carts hitting the cobblestones over on Sixth Avenue.
