Acknowledgments It is with intense pleasure that I thank the descendants of Charles Darwin for their warmhearted welcome, cooperation, and friendship during the five years it took to research and write this book. Lady Nora Barlow of Cambridge, Charles Darwin's last remaining grandchild, has been particularly generous, as she has been to all Darwin scholars for the past half century, in the permission to quote from her published works, and the use of unpublished personal family materials. My thanks also to her son. Professor Bernard Barlow of the University of California at Berkeley and of Cambridge University. Mr. George Darwin of London, Charles Darwin's great-grandson, and his wife, Angela, have been wholly supportive in our use of Charles Darwin's vast correspondence, both published and unpublished. In Cambridge the Keynes family: Sir Geoffrey, eminent surgeon and author. Professor Richard D. Keynes, working on The Beagle Record, Dr. Milo Keynes, editor of Essays on John Maynard Keynes, and Quentin Ke5me8, all but Sir Geoffrey great-grandchildren of Charles Darwin who have provided insights and precious unpublished material, some of it in preparation for their own books. Sir Hedley and Lady Judy Atkins, who were responsible 'for the refurbishing of Down House for the Royal Society of Surgeons, as it was during the forty years that the Darwins lived there, after om- first two yearly visits, invited us to live and work in Down House for several weeks the following year as their guests. Lastly, my deepest appreciation to Cambridge University Library, where most of Charles Darwin's manuscripts and correspondence are housed and catalogued in a special Darwin wing ably presided over by Peter Gautrey, M.A., who was indispensable over the entire five years of work. And to the late Cambridge University librarian, Eric B. Caedel, who showed how best to use the services of the Library. Dr. Sydney Smith of St. Catharine's College acquainted us with the Darwin's stacks and imparted some of the invaluable knowledge he keeps in his head.
