PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITIONThe most recent additions to the Russian edition of this book were made at the beginning of 1963. Less than a year has passed since then but quite a few new results have already appeared which should be reflected in this book. This circumstance is obviously a consequence of the rapid development of cosmic ray physics. At the same time, we think that the hope expressed in the foreword to the Russian edition, that the book as a whole is devoted to well enough established material, has been confirmed. The major additions made to the English edition deal with the question of the nature of radio-emitting electrons, the problem of the explosion of galactic cores and gamma astronomy. In addition quite a few minor changes have been made in which we have made use of both published papers and certain material we have received from the recent International Conference on Cosmic Rays (India, December 1963).In order to speed up publication of the English edition it has been more convenient to put the majority of the new material at the end of the book in the form of separate sections (these are Sections 17,18, and 19 and are articles written by us in 1963 which have since been altered slightly; they can be read separately from the rest of the text). It is our earnest hope that the appearance of the English translation of this book will prove useful and will enable a better exchange of scientific information and understanding between Soviet physicists and astrophysicists and their colleagues in other countries. In conclusion we should like to take the opportunity of expressing our great gratitude to Dr. D. ter Haar who so kindly undertook the considerable work of editing the English translation.MoscowV.
