FOREWORD. We fear the unknown and, therefore, I welcome this book which shows what my diabetics must face or rather have faced, but now in large measure can avoid if they will only heed the advice of modern medicine. A monograph upon the Pathology of Diabetes does not appear redolent of hope, but as I have watched sentences, paragraphs and ideas ánd fresh results of hard and thoughtful work go into this volume, I have seen hope creeping in too, and at length have realized that this is a pathology of and for the living almost as much as of the dead. The present diabetic ii hali' and half a surgical and a medicál diabetic, and this has afforded Dr. Warren an opportunity to have nearly a? ínany biojfsies as autopsies upon which to form his oonelusions and he has made the most of it. The friendlingss of other investigators in many laboratories all over the country, which Dr. Warren has experienced, has alsó impressed me during these months of compilation. This argues well for American medicine, and from it both doctors and patients will profit many fold. I am thankful that this Pathologist is young; can look with the unbiased, critical mind of youth upon the past; "can grow old along with" diabetes, and especially that the new George F. Baker Clinic for Chronic Disease will adjoin his laboratory. I am grateful for the training he received as Editor of the volume of Preventive Medicine just issued by the Harvard Medical School, because automatically a note of prevention of diabetes and its complications permeates the text. Somé day I wish all who read these pages could visit the modern operating room Dr. Warren has for his patients, for a Pathologist is a Doctor first of all, and there read the motto on the wall- Mortui vivos docent-because then you would come away not dreading to return.
