PREFACE Benedetto Croce is one of those men who belong to the marvellous period of the first half of twentieth century Italy: a period which presents the minds of Gentile, Rensi, Sturzo, Tilgher and Salvemini. Croce is well known in the world but it seems that this profound thinker has only received occasional notice in the United States. It is the main purpose of this book to make American sehol ars more aware of the thought of a man who certainly does not deserve a humble place in a nation which is bound to exercise a great influence upon the minds and hearts of men. American scholars can justly refute Croce's metaphysics, but no man can reject the message of liberty that one finds in Benedetto Croce. Croce himself often praised American dynamism, the political sagacity of Jefferson and Lincoln and especially in his late years he felt the great importance of the political and cultural life of the American people. In Dante's words "amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona." A.A.D.G.
