Preface How to Use This Book. This special edition of THE PHYSICAL SCI- ENCES has been prepared exclusively for off-duty study by military personnel. A book on a scientific subject such as this is not like a magazine story. You must be sure you understand what you are reading. Even though you know the meaning of all the words, you may have to go over the text two or three times to get the idea. You will find that the more you study, the easier it is to study effectively. Certificate of Proficiency and End-of-Course Test. When you finish this course you can obtain a Certificate of Proficiency by taking an End-of-Course Test. This certificate is issued to let you know how well you have done the work of the course. To obtain the End-of-Course Test, you should apply to the Armed Forces Institute, Madison, Wisconsin. If you do not have an application blank for the End-of-Course Test, ask the instructor of your class, your Educational Services Officer, your Special Service Officer, or your Librarian to supply you with one. Be sure to apply for the test before you finish the course. A good way to review for the test is to go over the sections called Important Things in This Chapter. Should you need a record of your educational experience for use in meeting school or college requirements or in qualifying for a job, write to the Com- mandant, Armed Forces Institute, Madison, Wisconsin, or to the nearest branch office of the Institute; or consult your Educational Services Officer, Special Service Officer, or Librarian. Material for the Instructor. The instructor should secure from the Special Service Officer or Educational Services Officer a copy of the Instructor's Man- ual. This contains answers for the problems for class discussion and the proj- ects, solutions for problems in the workbook, and many helpful suggestions for the successful conduct of the course.
