One might likewise speculate on the five pieces [D.459], which might be more familiar had they been publishedas Einstein points out they should have beenas a Piano Sonata. The three pieces [D.946] were intended to be the first three in another series of four Impromptus, like the familiar Op. 90 [D.899] and Op. 142 [D.935]. The autograph of the first of these pieces contains an Andantino section, reproduced on p. 200 of the present volume, which Schubert crossed out. (Its place in the sequence was as follows: Allegro assai Andante-Tempo I Andantino Tempo I.)The waltz of Diabelli is the same that was Beethoven's provocation for one of his masterpieces (in response to a kind of contest sponsored by Diabelli). In addition to the miscellaneous pieces collected in LPS No. 29 and the present volume, Schubert also wrote a large mass of pieces usually bracketed separately under the heading of dances: Minuets, Waltzes, Ländler, Ecossaises, German Dances, and others. The present edition is a photographic reduction, from Vol. 11 of Breitkopf & Hartel's "Urtext," based on the first printed editions and the autographs.
