prcfacr.Pbbvioüs to the present Publication, theio existed no work containing a complete collection, in regular order, of all the Music required for the various Offices of the Church throughout the year. One book contained one thing; another, another; Dut It needed a dozen different publications to supply the wants of choirs ; and even then many things were deficient, while others were prmted in such a way as to be unintelligible to ordinary singers. It is hoped that the present attempt to supply the desideratiun will be fotmd of practical utility.I. Morning Offices. With regard to the Morning Offices :Besides the usual music for the Asperges, Vidi Aquam, Responses, &c., an oasy arrangement of Chants has been given, by means of which the Introits and Qradmlsthose characteristic parts of the Service of the day, which are never omitted except through necessitycan be performed, even by the least experienced choir.Next, there are the whole of the Holy-Week Services, from Palm Sunday tc Holy Saturday inclusive, arranged and printed so that they can be sung by any choir without the possibility of mistake. The text of the Mr.sic is taken from the most approved soturces; while Chants are adapted to the Graduals, Tracts, &c., where the Ritual Music would be too long or difficult. In a similar way has been given the service of Candlemas-day.It hae been thought well to include the ordinary chant of the Credo, for tne Hake of those churches in which the planso general on the Continentis adopted, of singing tho Kyrie, Oloria, &c., in harmonised music, and learing the Credo to be long by the people.
