Preface My interest in surface chemistry was early aroused, and was highly encouraged when, as a medical student, I attended a two-year course in mathematics and physical chemistry, held by "Danmarks farmaceutiske Hejskole". The very inspiring tuition given by Professor dr. phil. Thor A. Bak, and Mag. scient. Jonas Lichtenberg, I shall always remember with gratitude. The investigations here presented were commenced in the early spring of 1962, and were thus not only planned but progressing, when in April, 1963, I was awarded a scholarship (Kandidatstipendium) by the University of Copenhagen. This naturally meant a more rapid progress of the work than would otherwise have been the case. My sincere thanks are due to my supervisor at the University, Professor dr. phil. Frank Lundquist, Institute of Biochemistry, for encouraging discussions and invaluable assistance with the biochemical problems which emerged. The histological investigations were carried out in the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, to the chief of which, Dr. med. S. Ry Andersen, I am greatly indebted. I also wish to express my gratitude for the invaluable help I received from the Institute of Medical Anatomy. I especially want to thank Dr. Helge Andersen, University Lecturer, Laboratory of Cyto- and Histochemistry, Dr. Franz Bierring, University Lecturer, Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, and Chief Technician J. Extensive parts of the work, particularly the biomicroscopical observations, were performed in the Eye Department of the University Hospital (Rigshospi-talet), Copenhagen, whose chief, Professor dr. med.
