F0REW0RD This volume consists of the agenda, list of participants and the text of the lectures delivered during the First International Museological Seminar held in Hungary. The Seminar was organized by the Institute of Conservation and Methodology of Museums, backed by the UNESCO, as part of the Laké Balaton Summer University in Veszprém. The Chemical Engineering School of Veszprém has been housing the Laké Balaton Summer University since 1958. The audience, whose majority comes from abroad, may get acquainted with the sights of the Laké Balaton region and alsó gets an inside view of the economical, political and cultural life of Hungary. The Institute of Conservation and Methodology of Museums joined the Summer University in 1976 to offer a fórum for museum experts to exchange their experiences, by forming the B section. On the first occasion - during July, last year - the regular and on-thejob education of conservators and restorers was discussed. The topic of this year "The problems of contents, didactics and aesthetics of modern museum exhibitions" kindled great interest. This manifested in the large number of lectures announced in advance and in the fact that during the Seminar further contributions were offered. This way the program became richer than planned. From the museum exhibitions of our days - it has come clearly to light - those are the most efficient ones which are organized in close connection with programs aimed at the activization of the public as part of the process of public education. From the 15th to the 26th July, 1977 84 museum experts from 21 countries conferred about the questions of exhibition-making. 34 lectures dealt with the theory of exhibiting, the dangers threatening the objects of virtu on display, modern and most recent exhibitions in museums and travelling exhibitions; several lecturers spoke of the everyday practice and methods of certain countries or individual museums.
