Preface The contributions in this book were prepared for the summit of progressive political leaders held in London on 11-13 July, 2003. The authors did not write their articles in isolation. The ideas developed were a result of several months of collaboration and discussion based upon a series of seminars held at the London School of Economics during the early months of 2003.1 should like to thank all those who contributed to the seminars, which without exception were intensive and constructive.
