The Pumpkin Eater Penelope Mortimer was born in North Wales and studied at London University. Her first writing consisted, in her own words, of 4 poetry and short stories of immense gloom and obscurityAfter the war she reviewed novels for Our Time and had one or two articles published in the New State sman. She alsó wrote a script for the B.B.C. and an occasional documentary-film commentary. Her first növel was published in 1947 and The Pumpáin Eater is her seventh published book. Penelope Mortimer, who is married to the playwright John Mortimer, is alsó widely known as a critic and for her short stories, most of which have appeared in the New Yor\er. She has six children and lives in London.
