PREFATORY NOTES This little text-book for young pupils is written in plain, simple language, in sucli a way that the principles underlying the study of written composition can be grasped by a child of twelve to thirteen years of age. The principal aim of the writer of the " Pupils' Class-Book " series is to train the children habitually to do more for themselves, and this book can really be studied and used by the children without a great amount of preliminary explanation. This book marks a distinct advance on the former books of the series ; but no special knowledge of earlier work on the part of the child is presupposed, the simpler rules dealt with in the former books being generally recapitulated. The work of each chapter is so arranged as to cover the three essentials for the writing of composition : first, the acquisition of ideas by the study of passages from well-known authors ; second, the enlargement of the vocabulary by an abundance of exercises on adjectival synonyms, adjectives, adverbs, phrases, the dictionary, easy latin roots and prefixes, sentences for imitation, poeticái extracts, etc. ; and third, the explanation of the simple grammMical rules and the functions of the parts of speech to enable the child to use his store of words correctly in sentences. A marked feature of this book is the tabular lists of words with similar meanings, in connection with which a table for ready reference has been included. Special stress has been laid on the training of the child to appreciate the several parts of a story, letter, or essay, and to assimilate his self-acquired knowledge by constant practice.
