EDITOR'S NOTE Macmillan's Student Series has been specially prepared for the more advanced pupil in school, the university student and the teacher specialising in the study of English. The books, which include novels, drama and short stories, have been selected from 20th Century English prose fiction. The short stories have been taken from the works of such authors as Saki, Somerset Maugham, Dylan Thomas, Aldous Huxley, Katherine Mansfield, Graham Greene, Alan Sillitoe, Joseph Conrad, E. M. Forster, James Joyce and John Wain. A selection of the novels and plays chosen is given on the inside back cover. The books have been abridged, but the originál text has in no way been altered. Notes and glossaries in English are included to help the non-English reader with difficult words and pronunciation. The texts have been chosen and prepared by a team of English and Continental editors specialising in English as a second language. It is proposed to publish two guides with this series: one giving a critical appreciation of English 20th Century novels and short stories, with special emphasis on the books in Macmillan's Student Series; and the other of English 20th Century drama, again with special emphasis given to the plays appearing in Macmillan's Student Series.
