Preface The Office for Continuing Medical Educa-tion at Temple University School of Medi-cine provides opportunities for learning and relearning the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for high quality medical care. One of the goals of this program is to help physicians keep informed of the latest theoretical and technical advances in medical science. This book attempts to help to fulfill this goal in the subject area of hemodilution. The book had its origins in a CME meeting held at Temple Medical School. A select group of experts in both the clinical and basic sciences were brought together from various parts of the world to discuss the theoretical and practical aspects of volume replacement with special attention given to intentional hemodilution. Ourfirst goal was to provide a comprehensive description of the current theories about pathophysiolog-ical principles governing tissue blood flow and oxygenation before and after hemodilution. We then planned to have presen-tations by and discussions among clinicians concerning the most appropriate applica-tion ofthistechnique in the clinic. Emphasis was given to the ways this technique could be used to optimize patient recovery. The participants were selected to provide a diversity of opinions about volume replacement techniques. As a result of the success of this meeting, we have decided to offer a written account of the ideas discussed. We have expanded the presentations to make them more comprehensible inwritten form. A transcript of the discussions among the participants is alsó included to help ensure that the most controversial issues are aired. We have alsó requested that Dr. Eisenstaedt contribute a chapter dealing with the complications of blood transfusion because of the obvious impact that these have on the choice of fluids used forvolume replacement. The Office for CME is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide category I CME credit. CME credit can be obtained through an examination based on the con-tents of this book. Readers who would be interested in earning credits in this way should contact the Office for Continuing Medical Education, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA 19140. The subject of hemodilution was selected because of the intensity of current interest in and controversies surrounding the use of this technique. Although transfusion is a very old and widely used procedure, there still remains considerable disagreement re-garding the type of fluids that should be used and the hematocrit that should be achieved following transfusion in order to provide optimál conditions for survival and recovery. This book presents an extensive discussion on the latest theories and techniques related to this subject.
