Preface

The original idea of writing this little book came to me thirty years ago; it stayed with me half a lifetime. I have often tried to carry it out, but I never succeeded, and the plans were put away. This time the task is completed; but even now I do not know if it is a success.
The longer one lives, the more plainly one sees that the simple things are the truly great. But for that very reason, they are also the most difficult to master. The highest task of spiritual writing would be, I dare say, to tell about God, so that the heart of man could easily understand. But who can do that?—The Rosary is something very simple; and therefore one should speak of it in the manner of simplicity. The reader should feel as if someone took him by the hand and led him into a world filled with tranquil life, a world in which he would meet, serene and benevolent, the holy images of faith. It is beyond my power to do this; so I have substituted my thoughts. May they at least be true and useful.
