PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION COLIN FELTHAM The most obvious change in this edition is the retirement of Ian Horton, who « enormous experi^^^^^^^^^ to the conception of this book and its editorship, and welcoming Terty Hanley and Laura are prominent, energetic and well connected among the next generatiot, 'h^raptsts and tra.ners, and they wt take this well-received text ahead when 1 retire quite soon. The first edition appeared tn 2000 and tt .s quite natural tha not only relevant world events and professional developments have had an impact on counselling and psychotherapy but also that personnel will change. • ¦ .u- We have studied and learned from the feedback of our readers and made due alterations to some of the ^OP'^S m this edition, as well as to authorship where necessary, and format. We very much hope these changes fairly and helpfiilly reflect significant changes in the field and in the needs of readers. Since the previous edition, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Voluntary Registers have been established. The fifth edition of the DW appeared. Significant work has been done on evidence-based guidelines, and modifications and innovations introduced accordingly. The BACP mica/ Framework for the Counselling Professions has been updated and (at the time of writing) the UKCP Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Conduct is being revised. Statutory provision of counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been developed, indeed, ceaseless activity can be witnessed throughout the field. At the same time, no one would claim that those responsible for professional progress have got everything right, and a duly critical eye on developments is one of the features in this edition of the Sage Handbook. A hundred years ago psychoanalysis was being energetically consolidated. Almost 80 years ago the British National Health Service was established and today remains a massive, treasured project, but is worryingly under-funded. BACP was formally established 40 years ago (with earlier roots in 1970) at a time when counselling was still received quite sceptically by a large section of the British public. Most of the major founding figures in the counselling and psychotherapy field are, sadly, now dead. During the twentieth century and the early part of the twenty-first, Europe has experienced dramatic social and political upheavals and most recently we have seen large demographic changes, which arguably challenge the apolitical assumptions and economic naivety of the original counselling movement. It usually proves foolhardy to make predictions, but it is not unreasonable to declare informed desires for the future of the field. Work is still awaited on integrative inroads on the problematic proliferation of therapeutic models. Similarly, although some attention is being paid to the politics of therapy, much more is needed; and opportunities exist to demonstrate the potential of therapeutic insights to be applied educationally to knowledge of interpersonal relationships, community building, and cooperation in addressing social cohesion needs. Counselling and psychotherapy are naturally pitched at the level of individual and family interventions and are sought in times of trouble. A new generation of psychologically minded practitioners is needed who can help proactively to bridge the gaps between individual, community and international needs. TERRY HANLEY AND LAURA WINTER As the incoming editors to The SAGE Handbook of Counselling and Psychotherapy, we begin by saying welcome to this new edition. Taking on such a task is a mammoth endeavour. With 113 chapters it has taken a huge amount of effort to commission, review and liaise with so many authors. It has, however, also been a privilege to be immersed into the worlds of so many esteemed colleagues and to engage proactively with the work that they do. We are sure you will find a great deal of useful and interesting content in the pages that follow As you will no doubt be aware, this handbook has not been conceived afresh. Tt is entering its fourth edition, after being a stalwart on the read.ng lists of counselling and psychotherapy programmes within L United Kingdom and beyond for approximately 17 years, with the first edition appearing in 2000, the second edition in 2006 and I third
