The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620.
They were not the first people who had come from Europe to the shores of America. Explorers had come. Men had come looking for gold and other things that would make them rich. But the Pilgrims were the first who came to settle down and make permanent homes in the wilderness.
They were thousands of miles from the king and the government of England. They decided to make their own laws and they agreed to obey them. The Pilgrim men signed a paper that is now called the Mayflower Compact. The paper said that each man had the right to vote, and that they could make their own laws and choose their own leaders. Men govern themselves? This was a new and surprising idea. And it worked well for the Pilgrims.
