PREFACE
I welcome this opportunity of thanking the President and Fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford, for their unfailing tolerance as well as for a year of sabbatical absence, which I attempted to put to good use. My manuscript has been scrutinized at different stages, much to its advantage, by Mr. Nicholas Henderson, Mr. Alan Bullock, and my wife; and the proofs have benefited from meticulous examination by my colleague Mr. C. E. Stevens.
Miss Mary Potter rendered me a great service by drawing the maps. I also acknowledge with gratitude permission to use details for the following maps: central Asia from EverymarCs Literary and Historical Atlas of Asia, published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., by permission of John Bartholomew & Son Ltd.; Far East and Portuguese Africa from T/ie Diplomacy of Imperialism by W. L. Langer, by permission of Alfred A. Knopf Inc.; and Persia from British Documents on the Origins of the War i8g8-igi4^ Vol. IV, by permission of the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office.
