PrologueThis is a true story which began in a field in Northern England in 1960 and ended beneath a pyramid in the jungles of Mexico, 35 years later. The birds danced in their basket awaiting release. Then they were soaring skywards, clapping their wings as though in applause, before rising beneath the cloud, circling twice, and setting a course for home.My eight-year-old heart stirred with the birds as they zig-zagged from view, leaving me alone in the field looking heavenwards: how did they find their way home?Nobody knew how the pigeon found its way home. Nobody knew how a spider acquired the knowledge to build its web. Nobody knew why things fell to the ground when they were dropped. It seemed then that whenever nobody knew anything about something, they gave it a name and somehow everything then became all right: 'because it's a homing pigeon'; 'instinct'; 'gravity' As I grew older my questions became increasingly troublesome: who am 1? Why do I live? Why will 1 die? What is life all about?Nobody had the answers.XI
