The nightclub had originally been a barn. Stalls had been converted to booths. The loft had been ripped away to expose splintery beams, now festooned with ropes of onions and red peppers. Feeding troughs were planted with plastic orchids in bark chips. An unpainted plywood bar ran the length of the back wall, facing the dance floor and tables. The acrid odor of manure lingered, mixing with the edgy scents of hashish, the sweat of dancers, fruity perfume.
Yakubu was the only customer at the bar. He wore a red bandanna knotted about his head.^A small gold loop hung from the lobe of his left ear. His blue workshirt was open to the navel. A necklace of yellowed shark teeth gleamed on smooth black skin.
