About this book
Scientists study the world around us. They look for explanations for everyday things, such as where lightning conies from and why rivers flow downhill. They make new discoveries and inventions, such as electricity, cars and
computers, that change the way people live. This book answers many questions about the world around you and explains the science in everyday life. It is divided into eight sections. Each section is shown by a different colour.

You can tell which section you are reading by looking at the coloured band along the top of the page.
On some pages there are quizzes. You can look up the answers on page 128.
There are simple experiments that can be done using everyday things.
Some things in the book have a red line around them. This is to warn you that they can be dangerous.
Words are written in bold type where they are first explained. There is also a hst of words with their explanations in the glossary on pages 116-119. There is an index on pages 120-127 to help you find things in the book.
Some words have an asterisk after them, hke this: gravity*. This means that you will find them in a footnote at the bottom of the page. The footnote tells you where those words are explained in the book.
