The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR for short, is one of the world's biggest states. It occupies a sixth of the globe, an area of 22.4 million square kilometres. Its territory lies in Eastern Europe and Northern and Central Asia, and extends from the Baltic and Black Seas in the west to the Pacific in the east, and from a Polar Archipelago in the north to the Pamirs in the south.
