PREFACE
The origin of this book may well have been a certain passage in a book which the present author read many years ago. The book was The Franciscan Message to the World by that eminent scientist and author, Father Agostino Gemelli O.F.M. The passage runs as follows: "Now, properly to grasp Franciscan spirituality, two things are necessary, first to acquire that supernatural viewpoint from which St. Francis started out, and secondly to meditate on his writings. For although his most outstanding disciples have been learned, systematic and subtle, no one was more evangelically accessible to all than he was him-self, nor at the same time so originál as to offer by intuition germs of thought the purport of which he perhaps hardly guessed himself and the logical con-clusions to be drawn from which it was left to others to discover and develop."
An excellent opportunity for just such meditation on the words of St. Francis was afforded by the publication in 1928 at Romé of a small book entitled, Sententiae Seraphicae. The author, Fr. Franciscus Monay O.F.M. Conv., had carefully sought out somé of the best quotations from the writings and sayings
