III Handel: The Water Music Although the "Water Music" is one of Handel's most popular orchestral works, its origins are not at all clear. A pretty legend leads us to believe that-it was the means by which a reconciliation was brought about between the composer and George I whose service Handel had left rather precipitately in 1712. The whole story is open to some doubt but a definite date in August 1715 has been given to the event. It took the form of a river-party similar to that which occurred two years later, although the second river-party is very well attested. The "Daily Courant" reported the 1717 party (July 17th) in the following terms: Obwohl die "Wassermusik" im Laufe der Zeit zu einem von Händeis bekanntesten Stücken geworden ist, sind die Zusammenhänge ihrer Enstehung durchaus nicht völlig klar. Eine hübsche Legende berichtet, dass sie die Versöhnung zwischen dem Komponisten und Georg I, dessen Dienst Händel 1712 so plötzlich quittiert hatte, herbeiführte; jedoch ist die Geschichte etwas zweifelhaft, und fest steht nur, dass die Versöhnung 1715 anlässlich einer auf dem Flusse stattfindenen Lustbarkeit zu Stande kam. Diese Gesellschaftsfahrt auf der Thames nahm ähnliche Formen an wie die von 1717, die sehr gut dokumentiert ist. Am 17. Juli 1717 berichtet die "Daily Courant" folgendermassen: ". . . the King took water at Whitehall in an open barge and went up river towards Chelsea. A City Company's Barge was employed for the Musick, wherein were 50 instruments of all sorts who played all the way from Lambeth the finest symphonies compos'd express for the occasion by Mr. Hendel (sic); which His Majesty liked so well that he caused it to be plaid over three times in going and returning . . ." The Prussian Resident in London, in a letter, detailed the instruments taking part as horns, oboes, trumpets, bassoons, german flutes, recorders and strings. All the principal sources of the text have the several items of the "Water Music" clearly divided into three suites in F, D and G major. The Barrett-Lennard ms. and the Walsh publications show the F major suite to contain parts for horns and oboes, the suite in D to contain trumpets, while the recorders only appear in the G major pieces. On this basis it is clear that all three suites were performed in 1717. A manuscript score of two items from the D major suite (though written in F) appear in an autograph manuscript in the British Museum which is presumed to date from 1715. It seems likely that some of the Der Preussische Gesandte in London beschreibt in einem Briefe die daran teilnehmenden Instrumente als Hörner, Oboen, Trompeten, Fagotte, Querflöten, Blockflöten und Streicher.
