Publisher's Foreword
The publication of Volumes Seven and Eight of The Way They Play series, with the new format which includes musical analysis of various works, plus fingerings and bowings from personal scores of leading string artists, has elicited much enthusiasm from our readers. Thus, we have pursued this policy in Volume Nine, together with the intimate discussions of instrumental lore and comprehensive photography incorporated in the series since its inception.
Imagine—if only we could have had similar personalized documentation from such greats of yesteryear as Viotti, Paganini, Vieuxtemps, Wieniawski, Neruda and Wilhelmj, among others! In this wise, the collaboration of Messrs. Applebaum and Roth constitutes an imperishable legacy embodying the musical erudition of eminent string personalities of our time.
In reply to many queries, we plan to continue the series indefinitely, since there is still a veritable legion of international con-certizing soloists, chamber music artists and first chair players of great orchestras who have important contributions to make to our collective string heritage.
We wish to acknowledge our deep appreciation to Paul Paradise for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of Volume Nine.
