What Is a Lake? A lake is a body of water that is surrounded by land. Lakes form in hollows in the Earth's surface called basins. Lakewater comes from rainfall and melting snow. Much of the water flows into the basin from rivers and streams. Most lakes are full of freshwater, but the biggest lake in the world is salty. Some lakes are so large they have been called seas.
