Foreword
I would argue that there is no more important problem in cardiology than heart failure—for both the patient and society. Heart failure also presents an immense management challenge to physicians, surgeons, nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Fortunately, we are meeting this challenge and heart failure is one of the most vibrant and fruitful areas for clinical science and clinical trials in cardiology. Important developments occur almost monthly, creating a new challenge which is keeping up to date with all of these exciting reports. Help is at hand! The Year in Heart Failure provides a superb summary of the key recent publications in every important area of heart failure. A valuable commentary, placing these new reports in context, is also provided by a team of recognized experts. Epidemiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, devices and surgical treatment are all covered. I particularly like the inclusion of a section on comorbidities, special populations and innovative therapies. I also like the inclusion of European and South American authors and perspectives on what is a global problem.
Drs Pina, Goldstein and Dunlap are to be congratulated on their selection of topics and authors and for their skilful editing. Each of the contributing authors, all distinguished investigators, must also be thanked for their elegant contributions. Everyone with an interest in heart failure will gain from having this fine book and, hopefully, so will more patients with that condition.
