The year 1938 is dead—its passing mçurned by few. Its days were full of fears and anxietiçs Its epitaph is CRISIS.
The year 1938 is dead. Looking ahead with hope tô a brighter future, we try to forget the fears and anxieties of the days when a world war between the nations seemed a bout to engulf us.
But tifose ciays of anxious fearfulness have their place in history. For years to come~we shaíl be arguing about the rights and wrongs of the décisions that were made. We shall be' taking stock of our national position in the ¦fjght of the lessons that we gained.
It has been a year of crisis and also a time of change.
The maps of Central Europe which did duty twelve rnonths ago are now out of date. Austria as a sovereign state has vanisihed ; instead, German}' has a new province. Czechöslovakia has been reduced. Some of her territories have gone to Germany, some to Hungary, some to Poland.
In the Far East vast régions of China are under Japan's precarious sway. Nearer home, in Spain, a further year's fighting ha^s extended the country over which General Franco has won control.
But the changes on the map only partially reflect the transformation, which has been accomplished in the international situation
