The Tang Priest Xuanzang (pronounced Sywanzang in two syllables) and his three disciples, Monkey, Pig, and Friar Sand, left the Five Village Temple and set out again for the West. One day they saw a steep mountain in front of them, with many wild animals lurking in the thick undergrowth. Monkey roared and whirled his magic cudgel to clear a way through and send all the wolves and tigers fleeing in terror. After that he escorted his master up the mountain.
