EXHIBITIONS IN LONDON
To celebrate Handel's tercentenary year the Theatre Muséum is collaborating with English National Opera on an exhibition which focuses on a new production Xerxes and the past success Julius Caesar. You will find the exhibition in Room 73 at the Victoria and Albert Muséum until 16th of this month. Also at the V A (Room 302 Henry Cole Wine) there is the second in the series of exhibitions which re-examine the Museum's holdings of works by the English Waterco-lourists. They are accompanied by mono-graphs on the artists concerned. The présent show covers the tradition of town view painting in the first half of the 19th century. The exhibition is entitled Watercolours by R. P. Bonington and his Associates; and Samuel Prout. English Caricature — 1620 to
begins. Bacon rcpivst'iiml Britain al the Venice Biennale in 1954 and has since been included in major exhibitions ail over the world and has been the subject of several books and films. He was given a rétrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1962, his last substantial one-man show in Eng-land.
Back to the V A Sceptical Landscapes: Park City by Lewis Baltz is the subject of the Photo Gallery (Henry Cole Wing) exhibition showingall tnrough this month. Lewis Baltz, born in Califorma in 1945, is among the most respected photographers of his génération. This is nis first solo exhibition in Britain. Baltz is one of a group of photographers linked by the term 'New Topographies' because tneir subject is the chang-ing face of the American Landscape, espe-cially where economic growth and the American dream collide nead on. Sceptical Landscapes is held to coincide with the major survey American Images: Photography 1945-1980 to which Lewis Baltz has contributed, held at the Barbican Art Gallery (until 30 J une). S. F.

the present—is also represented at the V A (Henry Cole Wing) from 12 June. A survey of English caricatures and satires from the grim anti-Catholic prints of the 17th century to the ribald and irreverent cartoons of to-day. All the major artists are powerfully represented with telling examples of the work of Hogarth, Rowlandson, Gillray, Cruick-shank, Leech, Sir Max Beerbohm, Sir David Low, Gerald Scarfe and Ralph Steadman.
An important new exhibition has recently openea at the Tate Gallery (Millbank, London SW1) on the works of Francis Bacon. One hundred and twenty six works from 1944 until the present day have been selected bv the Artist in association with the Tate Gallery and niany of his favourite works will be included. The paintings have been lent from collections in Europe, North America, Japan and Australia. Bacon was born in Dubl lin in 1909 of English parents. His public career as a painter began in 1946 with the showing in London of the Tate Gal-lery's Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion 1944 with wnich the exhibition
