PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION It is gratifying to know that the book is appearing in a third edition in America and in England and that it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, German, Portuguese, Hebrew, and Gujarati in this order. Again the bibliography has been brought up to date. Small corrections and additions were made in the text. But substantially the third edition is a reprint of the second. On some points I have been able to develop my ideas or to modify them in papers, referred to in the notes, which were published by the Yale University Press as Concepts of Criticism in 1963, and my History of Modern Criticism attempts to support the theoretical position here outlined as, in its turn, it draws criteria and values from Theory of Literature.
