AMERICA IS FOUND, EXPLORED, AND SETTLED In 1492 a man made a map of the world. He made this map in the shape of a globe, or a ball. A picture of it is shown above. This globe shows the earth as the wisest men living in 1492 thought it was. The map shows two continents, or bodies of land, called Europe and Asia. It alsó shows the northern part of Africa. The map shows an ocean between Europe and Asia. There are mistakes on this map. The ocean which lies west of Europe and Africa does not reach Asia. The southern part of Africa is not shown. The map does not show North America, the continent on which you live. It does not show South America either. The map shows just one ocean where there are two oceans and two continents. Yet it is correct in one important way. It is a globe. At that time wise men thought that the earth was round like a ball. But no one had ever sailed around it to prove its shape. So most men thought the earth was fiat because it looked fiat.
