To the student
Thinking English is the fourth volume in the Cassell Foundation English Course, so if you are studying this book, you will already have worked through Exploring English or some similar intermediate course book.
By now your knowledge of English grammar and structures must be pretty good. You should now be able to write accurately in English, but you probably want to write in different styles and express yourself In order to do this, you will need to enlarge your vocabulary and feel confident about your use of structures.
In this book you will find reading texts that are more demanding than any you have studied before. We hope they will interest you, help you to widen your vocabulary and lead to interesting discussions.
We have provided plenty of short practice exercises, designed to reinforce your knowledge of basic structures and sometimes to help you to express ideas in a more sophisticated way.
The taped listening material gives you a chance to listen to native speakers expressing their opinions and feelings in dialogues and in speeches. The practice activities will make you even more conscious of the importance of how things are said, and you will be able to practise, using the examples we have suggested.
Phrasal verbs are a constant worry for students learning English and you will find that we have introduced these gradually, unit by unit, so that by the time you finish the book, you will have met all of the most common ones and will feel confident when using them.
Being able to speak languages other than your own can open all sorts of doors and make life more fun. Perhaps English is the nearest thing we have to a world language. We hope this book will help you to improve your English and that you will enjoy using it. It could not have been written without Joanna Gray's contributions and Joy McKellen's very valuable editorial help.
