1976 City Lights BooksThis comprehensivc selection of the thoughts of Governor Ed-mund G. Brown of Califomia has been culled from his press conferenees, radio, television and magaziné interviews, addresses to the California Legislature and other speeches. Because these remarks are often spontaneous responses to questions by the média, not written texts, somé quoted second-hand from news-paper accounts, we could not always place them ín exact context nor guarantee absolute accuracy. However we have attempted to compile them fairly, in alphabetical arrangement by subject. On somé very crucial subjects for which one might hope to find a listing and does not, we might attribute it to the Governor's abhorrence of rhetoric rather than to his not having any thoughts on the matter.acknowledgmentsThanks to the following: America, California Journal, Co-Evolu-tion Quarterly, Economist, Esquire, Fortune, Los Angeles Times, NBC's Meet the Press, Nation, New Republic, New York Times, Newsweek, Office of the Governor, State of California, Ramparts, Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Chronicle & Examiner, San Francisco Magaziné, SECA's Firing Line, Time, U.S. News & World Re port.Special thanks to The Co-Evolution Quarterly and Stewart Brand for "Caring and Clarity"a conversation between Gregory Bate-son and Governor Brown which appeared in the Fali 1975 issue.Cover by Pamela MosherPhoto credits: Sacramento Bee, Lt.
