\ Introduction To the Top is a course which follows the requirements of the Common European Framework for languages and smoothly takes learners from Beginners to Intermediate level. It aims at achieving the following goals: •Communicative - to help students establish relations, exchange information, express ideas, attitudes and feelings. •Socio-culturai - to help students grasp an understanding of everyday life patterns of their age group. This covers topics such as home, school, leisure, etc. in the target language. •Learning liow to learn - to help students plan their work over a time span and set themselves realistic objectives. •Language and cultural awareness - to help students acquire an understanding of the language and culture. To the Top is based on a multidimensional syllabus which helps learners acquire and practise language through a combination of lexis, grammar, language functions and skills work. Moreover, the course follows the modular approach which enables students to deal with topics in depth and over a longer period of time. A building-block strategy has been employed, through which every lexical and grammatical item is carefully presented and systematically revised, enabling students to acquire the language naturally and use it in meaningful contexts. All four language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) are developed in an integrated way through communicative activities that approximate real-life situations. iiUUjiZE To the Top 4 is the fourth book in the To the Top series and is aimed at students at level B1 (Independent User/ Threshold). It is organised in eight modules, each of which is thirteen pages long and is based on a general topic. The topics of the book have been carefully selected to motivate learners and stimulate learning. The modules are well-organised within a steady framework; each module consists of five lessons and two revision pages. In this way, students are presented with five different aspects of the same topic. The modular approach promotes progress in all dimensions, and by the end of the course, students will have been systematically exposed to the functions and structures outlined in the contents. The course is designed to be completed In approximately 90-120 teaching hours. The precise time needed will vary according to factors such as school organisation, class size, learner ability and motivation. COURSE COMPONENTS Student's Book The Student's Book contains: •A table of contents presenting the topics, vocabulary, structures, functions as well as the language skills practised in each module. •Eight thirteen-page modules, each divided into five lessons and two revision pages. •Four culture pages and songs. •A speaking section including paitwork activities. •A guide to writing including writing tips and a plan for each type of writing. •A grammar reference section with useful tables. examples and explanations of the structures dealt with in each module. •A list of irregular verbs. •A word list consisting of the active vocabulary in alphabetical order per lesson. Workbook and Student's CD/CD-ROM The Workbook is in full colour and includes vocabulary, grammar and communication exercises as well as extra writing and reading practice. It is closely linked to the Student's Book, so it is easy to use and provides further practice of all the linguistic items practised In the Student's Book. Students are thus able to reinforce and consolidate what they have learnt and also gain a sense of achievement. It is recommended that some of the exercises in the Workbook be done in class but most of them should be assigned for homework. The FREE Student's CD/CD-ROM included in the Workbook features some of the presentations (dialogues, texts) and songs and is meant to give Ss extra listening practice at home. Interleaved Teacher's Book The Teacher's Book contains: •An introduction. •A table of contents as it appears in the Student's Book. •Teacher's Notes interleaved with the pages of the Student's Book. Each lesson includes tables of the functions, structures and vocabulary introduced and useful notes for teaching as well as any necessary background information. These notes provide teachers with a step-by-step guide to each stage of the lesson within a flexible framework that allows teachers to adapt the activities to their own teaching style as well as to the students' needs. Answers to all exercises, transcripts of the listening tasks and ideas for extra practice are also included. •A speaking section including pairaiork activities, a guide to writing including writing tips and a plan for each type of writing, a grammar reference section, a list of irregular verbs and a word list as they appear in the Student's Book. Class CDs The Class CDs include all the recorded material from the sections in the Student's Book where the symbol @ appears. Student's Portfolio To the Top Portfolio is a notebook In the form of a diary. It enables students to record and present new information they have learnt and thus monitor their progress. Two projects per module are also included for this purpose. Grammar Book The Grammar Book is designed in accordance with the syllabus of the Student's Book and provides students with further practice of the structures taught in each module. Test Booklet and CD-ROM The Test Booklet contains: • 8 tests corresponding to the modules of the book. •A final exam. The CD-ROM includes all the material in the Test Booklet in electronic form, which gives the teacher the ability to add, omit or change the order of the items and/or exercises according to the needs of their classes.
